Today, April 8, Russia celebrates Russian Animation Day — a holiday that brings together generations of artists and audiences inspired by the art of bringing images to life.

This date was not chosen by chance: it was on April 8, 1912, that the premiere of the first domestic animated film took place — “The Beautiful Leukanida, or the War of the Stag Beetles and the Longhorns” by Vladislav Starevich. From that moment began the history of Russian animation — a unique phenomenon of world culture, combining artistic boldness, technical innovation, and a deep national tradition.

Over more than a century, Russian animation has evolved from early puppet experiments and studio collectives of the 1920s–1930s to the creation of the legendary Soyuzmultfilm school, which became a symbol of high professionalism and creative exploration. In the post-war years, a distinctive style emerged, rooted in the richness of Russian culture, folklore, and literary heritage, and the works of Russian directors gained recognition on the international stage.

Today, Russian animation is an industry that unites auteur and commercial cinema, traditional and digital technologies, young artists and established masters.

The Russian Animated Film Association (RAFA) congratulates all creators, researchers, and fans of animation on this holiday. We wish you inspiration, new ideas, vivid imagery, and bold artistic decisions. May Russian animation continue to be a source of creativity, cultural dialogue, and pride for the entire country.
