Russian Animation Industry: Key Growth Drivers and Industry Challenges Discussed at Kinobusiness 2026 Conference

On August 10, Moscow hosted the “Focus on SMEs: Kinobusiness 2026” conference dedicated to the development of the contemporary film industry, effective business models, and new opportunities for companies operating in the sector.

The event brought together representatives of business, public institutions, and the professional community. Participants discussed the economics of film production, investment opportunities, intellectual property development, the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence, as well as prospects for the further development of the Russian film business. Conference participants included representatives of Amedia Production, Soyuzmultfilm, Gorky Film Studio, and other industry companies and organizations.

Particular attention in the program was given to the development of the Russian animation industry. Maria Melnichuk, Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Animated Film Association, delivered a presentation titled “The Animation Industry Today: Challenges, Opportunities and Growth Drivers.”

Her presentation highlighted the key trends currently shaping the industry. These include growing demand for Russian content, the development of licensing and animation-related industries, improvements to government support mechanisms, and the search for new monetization models for animated projects.

At the same time, the Russian animation industry continues to operate amid rising production costs, competition for qualified professionals, restrictions affecting access to international markets, and the need for further development of Russian software solutions.

Another key topic was the expansion of opportunities for animation brands beyond traditional content distribution. The development of licensing, cooperation with adjacent industries, and the use of intellectual property across various categories of goods and services are creating additional growth opportunities for Russian animation companies.
